My Spiritual Practice Deepened During Perimenopause

Her body was struggling but her spirit was awakening. Perimenopause became a spiritual journey.

I was meditating every morning during perimenopause and I found something unexpected. As my body was struggling, my spirit was waking up. I was sitting in silence and feeling connected to something larger than myself. I was feeling less attached to how my body looked and more interested in who I was becoming. Perimenopause became a spiritual initiation instead of a medical crisis.

How I got here

I had always been interested in spirituality but I had never been disciplined about a spiritual practice. I had dabbled in meditation and yoga but I did not have a consistent practice. When perimenopause started, I was looking for something to anchor me. Something that would help me feel more grounded and less scattered. A friend suggested meditation. I was skeptical but I was willing to try.

What I actually did

I started meditating every morning for 20 minutes. The first week was hard. My mind was chaotic. I was thinking about my symptoms and my worries. But by the second week, something shifted. I could observe my thoughts without being attached to them. When I had a hot flash, I could notice it without identifying with it. When I had anxious thoughts, I could watch them pass without believing them. I started reading spiritual texts about midlife and aging. I started to see perimenopause not as a medical problem but as a spiritual transition. I began to see this season of life as an opportunity to go deeper into my spiritual practice.

What actually changed

My anxiety decreased. My sense of peace increased. I was less identified with my body and more connected to something deeper within myself. I felt like I was waking up spiritually even as my body was struggling. I felt less afraid of aging because I understood that aging was part of a larger spiritual journey. I felt more connected to other women going through perimenopause because I understood that we were all part of a larger collective awakening.

What my routine looks like now

I meditate every morning. I do a weekly yoga practice. I read spiritual texts. I go on retreats. I track my inner peace and connection using PeriPlan. My spiritual practice has become as important to my perimenopause management as any medical treatment.
