Adapting My Skincare For Aging Skin During Perimenopause

Her skin aged rapidly during perimenopause. Adjusting her skincare routine helped her feel more confident.

My skin aged seemingly overnight. That was not hyperbole. In a matter of months, wrinkles appeared that had not been there before. I could point to the exact moment in my photos when my skin changed. Deep lines formed around my mouth, making it look like I had been pursing my lips for years even though I had not been. Deep lines formed between my brows, giving me a perpetually worried expression. Dry patches appeared across my cheeks and forehead, making my skin look rough and uneven. My skin tone became uneven and dull, losing the clarity and glow it had always had. I was shocked at how quickly my skin changed. I looked in the mirror and barely recognized myself. My skin looked tired and aged. There was no mistaking what I saw. I was getting older. Visibly, noticeably, rapidly older. I realized my old skincare routine, which had served me well for years, was no longer working. My lightweight moisturizer was insufficient. My simple cleansing routine was inadequate. I had to completely rethink my approach to skincare.

How I got here

My skin had been relatively youthful looking for years. I had been fortunate to have good skin that did not require extensive care. I used a basic cleanser, a lightweight moisturizer, and sunscreen. That routine had worked well through my 30s and early 40s consistently. Then perimenopause hit and my skin seemed to age rapidly in months. Hormonal changes affected my skin's moisture, elasticity, and collagen production. Estrogen supports the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin. When estrogen declines, skin becomes drier, thinner, and less elastic. My skin became noticeably drier and uncomfortable. Dry patches would appear, especially across my cheeks and forehead. My skin felt tight and uncomfortable and itchy. My skin became more wrinkled. Fine lines became deeper and more pronounced. My old lightweight moisturizer was no longer adequate at all. I could apply it and within an hour my skin would feel dry again. I was frustrated and felt helpless. My skin had never required much attention before. Now it demanded care and attention.

What I actually did

I completely updated my skincare routine based on research about perimenopause skin and recommendations from a dermatologist who specialized in aging skin. I started using a richer, more nourishing moisturizer formulated with hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which help the skin barrier retain moisture and repair the damage from dry conditions. I added a retinoid treatment, starting slowly with a low concentration and working up as my skin adapted, because retinoids have the most research support for reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Retinoids support collagen production and cell turnover, which helps with fine lines and skin texture and overall skin quality. I added a vitamin C serum in the morning, which is a powerful antidote to dull, aged-looking skin and also provides antioxidant protection against environmental damage. I started using a facial oil after my moisturizer to seal in hydration and provide nourishing fats that my skin was not producing enough of on its own. I added a hydrating mask once a week, which delivers intense moisture and gives my skin a visible boost. I also started taking marine collagen supplements, which provide the building blocks for new collagen production from the inside. Collagen supports not just skin but also joints and overall connective tissue. I increased my water intake to support hydration from within, drinking at least 8 glasses daily. I was more consistent with sunscreen, using a mineral sunscreen daily because sun exposure accelerates skin aging dramatically and any skin care improvements will be undone by sun damage if you do not protect against it. I also gave myself permission to invest in quality skincare products rather than using the cheapest option, understanding that this was an investment in my health and confidence. Within a few weeks, my skin looked less dry and less wrinkled. The dry patches cleared completely. The deep lines softened noticeably. Within a few months, my skin looked more radiant and healthier than it had in years. People commented that I was glowing.

What actually changed

My skin improved significantly. It is still older looking than it was before perimenopause; that is the reality of aging and I have made peace with it. But it looks healthy, radiant, and well-cared for, which is what I can actually control. The deep lines around my mouth are softer and less noticeable. The deep lines between my brows are less pronounced. The dry patches are completely gone. My skin tone is more even and has a glow that was not there when my skin was parched. I look more like myself. I feel good about how my skin looks. When I look in the mirror, I do not see a stranger who has aged overnight. I see myself, but healthier and more polished. I am no longer distressed by my aging skin because it is well-cared for and it looks genuinely good. I am no longer comparing myself to my younger self, which was a losing game. I am appreciating my skin as it is now, recognizing that skin can improve and look good at any age with proper care.

What my routine looks like now

I have a thorough skincare routine that addresses my aging, perimenopause skin. My morning routine includes cleansing with a gentle cleanser, applying vitamin C serum which brightens and protects, applying a hydrating moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, and applying sunscreen religiously. My evening routine includes cleansing thoroughly to remove the day, applying retinoid on 3-4 nights a week as tolerated, applying a richer night moisturizer with ceramides, and applying facial oil to seal everything in. Once a week, I use a hydrating mask instead of my evening moisturizer to deliver extra hydration. I take collagen supplements daily, which provide ongoing support for skin health and also support joint health and gut health. I wear sunscreen every single day without exception, understanding that this is the most important anti-aging step. I track my skin health using PeriPlan, noticing how my skin changes with my menstrual cycle and adjusting my routine as needed. I also prioritize sleep and stress management, which significantly impact skin quality and skin aging. My skin looks and feels healthy. It looks glowing. It feels resilient and nourished.
