I Took a Perimenopause Retreat. Here's What Changed.
One woman's transformative experience attending a perimenopause-specific wellness retreat.
Where I Started
By 46, I was completely isolated in my perimenopause experience. I didn't know any other women going through it. I thought I was alone. I thought maybe my experience was worse than what other women experienced. I was ashamed. I was secretive. And I was drowning. When I saw an advertisement for a women's wellness retreat specifically for perimenopause, I almost didn't go. It seemed self-indulgent. It was expensive. But I also desperately needed something to shift. Something had to change.
The Turning Point
I signed up for the retreat in October. It was a long weekend in November at a spa resort with other women in perimenopause. Yoga. Massage. Workshops on managing symptoms. Most importantly, time with other women experiencing exactly what I was experiencing. When I arrived, I was nervous. I didn't know anyone. I was skeptical it would help. Then the first evening, in the welcome circle, women started sharing their stories. And I realized I wasn't alone. I wasn't weird. I wasn't broken. I was normal. We all were.
Here's What I Did
The retreat was structured but also spacious. Workshops on HRT options. Yoga for perimenopause. Meditation. Nutrition information. But most importantly, time to connect with other women. The first night, I barely slept because I was in the rooms talking to other women about our experiences. For the first time, I could be honest about what perimenopause was doing to me without shame. Other women got it. They understood. Over the weekend, I learned strategies from women who'd been through harder things than me. I made friendships with women who understood. I also got body work done. A massage. Acupuncture. Things that helped my body feel cared for instead of betrayed.
When It Worked
I came home from the retreat different. I was no longer ashamed. I had a community of women I could text. I had strategies from real women who'd tested them. I had proof that I wasn't alone and my experience wasn't unique. I was also physically more relaxed. The massage and acupuncture had helped my body. But more than that, I felt seen. I felt understood. That alone made a huge difference.
What Changed for Me
The retreat removed my isolation. I went home with friendships with other women in perimenopause who get it. I went home with strategies from real people, not medical experts telling me about symptoms they've never experienced. I went home feeling like perimenopause was a shared experience, not a lonely one. And that changed everything. My anxiety decreased because I wasn't alone. My shame decreased because other women normalized my experience. My sense of community increased exponentially.
For You
If you have the opportunity to attend a perimenopause-specific retreat or gather with other women in perimenopause, I highly recommend it. The sense of community alone is worth the cost. You'll learn from real women with real experience. You'll make friends who get it. And you'll realize you're not alone in this. That changes everything.
