Tracking My Cycle Helped Me Understand My Perimenopause Patterns
She thought her perimenopause symptoms were random. Tracking her cycle showed her the patterns.
I started tracking my menstrual cycle and my symptoms and patterns started to emerge. I realized my symptoms were not random. They were connected to my cycle. Some weeks were better than others. Some weeks were much harder. By understanding the patterns, I could prepare and manage my symptoms better.
How I got here
My perimenopause symptoms felt chaotic and unpredictable. One day I would feel fine and the next day I would feel terrible. I did not understand what was causing the fluctuations. I felt helpless because I could not predict when I would have a good day or a bad day.
What I actually did
I started tracking my menstrual cycles using a tracking app. I also started tracking my symptoms. I noted when I had hot flashes, what my mood was, my energy level, my sleep quality. Within a few months of tracking, patterns emerged. I realized my symptoms were worse the week before my period and better the week after. I realized certain activities made symptoms worse. I realized certain foods made symptoms worse. With this knowledge, I could prepare for the hard weeks. I could avoid triggers during the difficult weeks. I could celebrate the good weeks.
What actually changed
My sense of control improved. Even though my symptoms did not disappear, I felt less helpless because I could predict them. I could plan my life around my cycle. I could prepare for bad weeks instead of being blindsided. My mental health improved when I understood my patterns.
What my routine looks like now
I track my cycle and my symptoms using PeriPlan. I plan my activities based on my cycle. I know which weeks are harder and I prepare. I know which weeks are easier and I plan more demanding activities then. Tracking has been one of my most useful perimenopause management tools.
