Working With Perimenopause Instead of Against It

She spent months fighting perimenopause. Everything changed when she started working with it instead.

I was sitting at my desk on a day when my brain fog was at maximum and I was absolutely furious at myself for not being able to focus on my work. I was pushing myself, trying to force myself to have the same focus and productivity I had always had. It was not working. I was exhausted and frustrated and making mistakes. Then I thought, what if instead of fighting this, I actually worked with it? What if on the days when my brain is foggy, I do the kind of work that does not require deep focus? What if I respect the natural fluctuations of my body instead of fighting against them? That simple shift in perspective changed everything.

How I got here

I had spent months trying to be exactly the same person I had always been despite perimenopause. I woke up foggy and I pushed myself to focus anyway. I was tired and I pushed myself to exercise anyway. I was anxious and I pushed myself to do client calls anyway. I was not honoring what my body actually needed. I was just trying to force myself into the mold of who I had always been. That approach was not working. I was exhausted and frustrated and my performance was suffering because I was not working with my body. I was working against it.

What I actually did

I started planning my work around my natural rhythms. On days when my brain fog was heavy, I would do administrative tasks, email, routine work that did not require deep focus. On days when my brain was clear, I would tackle the projects that required deep thinking. I also started honoring my energy levels. On days when I was exhausted, I would not push myself to do an intense workout. I would do something gentler, like yoga or a walk. On days when I had energy, I would do more intense exercise. I also started being honest with my team about what I could realistically accomplish on any given day. I stopped overpromising and then not delivering. I started giving them realistic timelines based on my actual capacity. Over the course of a few weeks, I stopped fighting against my changing rhythms and started working with them. Everything got easier.

What actually changed

My productivity actually increased. By honoring the days when my brain could do deep work and the days when it could not, I was able to accomplish more meaningful work overall. My stress decreased because I was not constantly fighting against my own body. My relationships with my team improved because I stopped overpromising and making excuses when I could not deliver. What did not change is that I still have perimenopause symptoms. But I am no longer working against them. I am working with them.

What my routine looks like now

I plan my work intentionally based on my natural rhythms. I honor my energy levels. I am realistic about what I can accomplish on any given day. I do not push myself against my body's signals. I listen to what my body is telling me and I adjust accordingly. I use PeriPlan to track my energy and my focus, which helps me understand my patterns so I can plan my work accordingly.

If you are struggling at work because of perimenopause symptoms, I would encourage you to stop fighting your body and start working with it. Respect the days when your brain is foggy by doing work that does not require deep focus. Honor your energy levels by adjusting your exercise accordingly. Be honest about your capacity. The irony is that when you stop fighting your body and start working with it, you actually become more productive because you are working in alignment with your natural rhythms instead of against them.
