Perimenopause Beauty: Accepting Your Changing Appearance

Your appearance is changing during perimenopause. Learning to accept helps.

You look different. Your face is different. Your hair is different. Your skin is different. Your body is different. You look in the mirror and don't quite recognize yourself. Aging was supposed to be gradual but perimenopause made it fast. You're grieving the person you used to see in the mirror. You're trying to accept the person you see now. You're also wondering if anyone else sees what you see. If other people think you look old. If they notice the change.

Why perimenopause makes appearance changes

Estrogen affects skin elasticity, collagen, and moisture. When it drops, your skin changes. Your face can look older. Your skin might be dryer. Your hair can thin. Your face shape can change. You might have more or less facial hair. You might have age spots. You might have acne. All the physical things that make someone look young are affected by estrogen. Your appearance changing is real biology, not imagination.

The grief of visible aging

You spent decades not thinking about aging. It was theoretical. Now it's visible. You see it in the mirror every day. You see it in photos. You're aging visibly and the world is noticing. You're grieving the person you were and accepting the person you're becoming. This grief is real and it deserves acknowledgment.

Fighting appearance versus accepting it

You can spend money and energy fighting perimenopause changes. Botox. Fillers. Hair treatments. Skincare. Or you can accept that you're aging and care for yourself in ways that make you feel good without fighting aging. Both are valid. If you want to pursue treatments, you can. If you want to accept your aging and move on, you can. Neither is wrong. It's your choice.

The beauty standard trap

Beauty standards in our culture don't include aging women. Aging women are supposed to be invisible. If you're visible, you're supposed to be fighting aging. You're not supposed to be okay with it. That trap is real. But you don't have to believe it. You can age. You can be visible. You can be okay with your changing appearance.

Skincare and hair care that feels good

You can take care of your skin because it feels good, not because you're fighting aging. Sunscreen. Moisturizer. Whatever makes your skin feel okay. You can color your hair or let it gray. You can change your hair style. You can take care of your hair because you like how it feels. Self-care for the sake of feeling good is different from fighting aging.

Accepting your appearance now

You look how you look. You're aging. That's what humans do. You can fight it or accept it. Most women find that accepting it is easier. You're not less attractive because you're aging. You're not less worthy. You're just older. And you get to decide what that means for you.

Your appearance is changing during perimenopause. You can grieve the changes. You can accept them. You can care for yourself in ways that feel good. You don't have to fight aging. You can just age.
