I Tried Evening Primrose Oil for One Month for Perimenopause

Evening primrose oil is often recommended for perimenopause symptoms. Here's what she actually experienced.

I was at the vitamin store looking for something to help with my breast tenderness, which had become quite pronounced during perimenopause. The person working there recommended evening primrose oil. She explained that it was rich in gamma-linolenic acid, which apparently helps with hormonal symptoms. I was skeptical, but I was also willing to try anything that might help with the breast tenderness. I bought a bottle and I started taking it the next day.

How I got here

The breast tenderness was one of the less talked about symptoms of my perimenopause, but it was significant. My breasts were tender and uncomfortable almost all the time. Bras hurt. Exercise hurt. Everything hurt. I asked my doctor about it and she said it was likely related to hormonal fluctuations. She suggested I could try evening primrose oil or just wait for my hormones to stabilize. I was not patient enough to just wait. I wanted to try something.

What I actually did

Week one of evening primrose oil, I did not notice any difference. Week two, I thought maybe the breast tenderness was slightly better, but I was not sure. Week three, I was more convinced that there was an improvement. The tenderness was noticeably less. By week four, I had to admit that the evening primrose oil seemed to be helping. The breast tenderness was so much better. I could wear bras comfortably. Exercise did not hurt anymore. I was genuinely surprised by how well it seemed to work.

What actually changed

The breast tenderness decreased significantly. This was the main symptom I was targeting and it actually improved. What did not change is that this was my only real improvement. My other perimenopause symptoms did not change noticeably. The hot flashes were still there. The mood swings were still there. But for the breast tenderness specifically, evening primrose oil seemed to help. I have continued taking it because it addresses this one symptom that was bothering me.

What my routine looks like now

I continue to take evening primrose oil daily. The breast tenderness has remained improved. I do not know if I will need to take it forever or if at some point my hormones will stabilize enough that I do not need it anymore. But for now, it is helping with this one symptom that was quite bothersome.

If you are experiencing breast tenderness during perimenopause, evening primrose oil might be worth trying. It seems to help some women. It did not address my other symptoms, but for this specific one, it was effective. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking it, especially if you are on blood thinners or other medications. What worked for me is not medical advice, and what your body needs may be completely different.
